Frequently Asked Questions

At N S Pain Therapy we get asked many questions about what we do. What is physiokey, is it like TENS, how does it work, as well as many more? Below we break down some of those questions which we hope will explain what we do and what to expect from your treatment.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment feel free to contact us via phone, or fill out our contact form on the contact us page.

What is the therapy used at N S Pain Therapy, Tweed Heads South?

Our clinic uses electrotherapy. Physiokey is the electrotherapy device we utilise.

What does the N S mean in N S Pain Therapy?

The 'N S' in our name means neuro-stimulation.

What is Non-Invasive Interactive Neurostimulation?

Non-Invasive Interactive Neurostimulation Therapy is a form of electrotherapy. Physiokey is the application (electrotherapy) device used at N S Pain Therapy.

Non-Invasive means it does not penetrate the skin. Interactive Neurostimulation means it's communicating with the nervous system by means of electronic stimulation.

How does physiokey work?

Physiokey delivers an impulse to the skin that is received by the body's nervous system. The Physiokey device is small, about the size of a television remote control. The Physiokey is moved across the skin locating 'active' areas/points that generally correlate to the painful/injured area. As the body receives stimulation from the Physiokey the brain responds by releasing a 'flood' of neuro and regulatory peptides. These peptides are believed to bring about physical changes in the body including pain relief, reduced swelling, and restoration of function.

Is treatment painful?

Physiokey treatment is not painful.

The therapist continually engages with the client regarding the feeling of the physiokey on the skin. Everyone is different and we understand some people are very sensitive when it comes to skin contact. The physiokey gives out a tingling feeling. Sometimes this can feel like little needles and sometimes just a vibration. It can vary from treatment to treatment and person to person.

Treatment will never be painful as the therapist adjusts the power level in conjunction with what the client desires.

Feedback is encouraged throughout the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This is one of those 'how long is a piece of string' questions.

Every person has their own personal history that makes them who they are. This history creates our beliefs. Interestingly, when it comes to how fast the body heals, it can be our beliefs that either speed or hinder the outcome.

We always encourage our clients to believe they can get well regardless of their condition.

Your general health can play a factor in the speed of healing. A healthy body generally heals faster than an unhealthy one.

Generally speaking the more recent the condition the faster the result.

Another factor to consider is what change the client is trying to achieve. Not everyone wants to be 100% pain free. Just to be able to participate in life at a predetermined level is all some people desire. This can be very different from person to person.

As a general guide we recommend 2 treatments a week for the first 2 to 3 weeks, then weekly treatments thereafter. We continually review your progress and make changes to this schedule as required.

You should discuss with the therapist what the desired outcome is you wish to achieve.

How long is a treatment?

General treatments range from 30 minutes to an hour. A first appointment may be up to 75 minutes depending on your case history.

Is physiokey the same as TENS?

Physiokey is registered with the TGA (Therapeutics Goods Administration) as a TENS type device, but this is where the difference ends. A TENS device is limited by its' inability to communicate to the body through biofeedback. A TENS device stimulates muscle contraction and may give relief in the short term. Physiokey on the other hand is able to measure the adaptive response of the body through biofeedback and adjusts its interaction to encourage a peptide release. These peptides are what is believed to bring reduction in pain and swelling.

What should I expect after my treatment?

This question is answered in more detail on 'Our Therapy' page.

What should I wear?

This question is answered on our 'what to wear for electrotherapy' webpage. Generally speaking, loose fitting clothing with a separate top and bottom is preferable. Click on the link for more information.

Do I need a referral?

No, you don't need a referral from a GP (doctor).

If you have any scans or reports then feel free to bring them along.

How much does it cost?

Our fees are listed on our 'fees' page. Please click on the link for information.

Can I claim health fund rebates?

Health fund rebates are not claimable for our service, but don't let that put you off trying electrotherapy. Many of our clients are amazed at what just one treatment can achieve.
